বঙ্কিমচন্দ্র চট্টোপাধ্যায় সেই আফিঙ্গখোর কমলাকান্তের অনেক দিন কোন সম্বাদ পাই নাই। অনেক সন্ধান করিয়াছিলাম, অকস্মাৎ সম্প্রতি একদিন তাহাকে ফৌজদারী আদালতে দেখিলাম। দেখি যে, ব্রাহ্মণ এক গাছতলায় বসিয়া, গাছের গুঁড়ি ঠেসান দিয়া, চক্ষু বুজিয়া ডাবায় তামাকু টানিতেছে। মনে করিলাম, আর কিছু না, ব্রাহ্মণ লোভে পড়িয়া কাহার ডিবিয়া হইতে আফিঙ্গ চুরি করিয়াছে-অন্য সামগ্রী কমলাকান্ত চুরি করিবেনা-ইহা নিশ্চিত জানি। নিকটে একজন কালোকোর্ত্তা কনষ্টেবলও দেখিলাম। আমি বড় দাঁড়াইলাম না-কি জানি যদি কমলাকান্ত জামিন হইতে বলে। তফাতে থাকিয়া দেখিতে লাগিলাম যে, কাণ্ডটা কি হয়।কিছুকাল পরে কমলাকান্তের ডাক হইল। তখন একজন কনষ্টেবল রুল ঘুরাইয়া তাহাকে সঙ্গে করিয়া এজ্লাসে লইয়া গেল। আমি পিছু পিছু গেলাম। দাঁড়াইয়া, দুই একটি কথা শুনিয়া ব্যাপারখানা বুঝিতে পারিলাম।এজ্লাসে, প্রথমত মাচানের উপর হাকিম বিরাজ করিতেছেন। হাকিমটি একজন দেশী ধর্ম্মাবতার-পদে ও গৌরবে ডিপুটি। কমলাকান্ত আসামী নহে-সাক্ষী। মোকদ্দমা গরুচুরি। ফরিয়াদি সেই প্রসন্ন গোয়ালিনী।কমলাকান্তকে সাক্ষীর কাটরায় পূরিয়া দিল। তখন কমলাকান্ত মৃদু মৃদু হাসিতে লাগিল। চাপরাশী ধমকাইল- “হাস কেন?”কমলাকান্ত যোড়হাত করিয়া বলিল. “বাবা, কার ক্ষেতে ধান খেয়েছি যে, আমাকে এর ভিতর পূরিলে?”চাপরাশী Read More …
