Abstract This paper explores the concept of poetic sensibility and romantic imagination through the theoretical formulations of William Wordsworth and its resonances in Bengali literary thought, particularly in the works of Rabindranath Tagore. Wordsworth’s seminal ideas expressed in Lyrical Ballads—especially his definition of the poet as “a man speaking to men”—redefine poetic creativity as an intensified form of human sensibility and emotional responsiveness. The study further examines critical interpretations of Romantic imagination by scholars such as Andrew Welsh and Herbert Read, highlighting notions of depth, emotional overflow, and “Romantic Extravagance.” In parallel, the paper analyses Tagore’s reflective prose and lyrical expressions to demonstrate how Romantic ideals are reinterpreted within the Bengali cultural and philosophical milieu. Through textual comparison and critical reflection, the study reveals a shared emphasis on heightened perception, emotional authenticity, and the transcendental dimension of poetic experience.
