Impact of Rabindra Sangeet Melodies and Instrumental Music on Hindi Film Song

Dr. Durba Singha Roy Choudhury Abstract: This research explores the profound influence of Rabindra Sangeet’s melodies and instrumental music on the evolution and development of Hindi film music. The abstract highlights Rabindranath Tagore’s unique approach to music composition, wherein he integrated tunes from diverse sources worldwide into his own distinctive creations. The musical environment at Thakurbari encompassed both Indian and Western songs, with Tagore’s exposure to more Western music following his 1878 trip abroad. This influence is evident in his initial ballads, ‘Valmiki Pratibha’ and ‘Kaalmrigaya,’ fashioned in an operatic style, blending foreign tunes, Bengali melodies, and classical raga-ragini. The impact of various provincial and Western tunes extends beyond ballads to many of Tagore’s songs. Notably, post-Rabindra era music directors such as Salil Chowdhury, Sachin Dev Burman, and Pankaj Kumar Mallick incorporated Tagore’s melodies into their compositions. This trend continued with later directors like Bapi Lahiri, Rajesh Roshan, and Shantanu Read More …
